Summary

  • Since Season 2, 9-1-1 fans have advocated for Evan "Buck" Buckley and Eddie Diaz to develop a romantic couple.
  • 9-1-1 made a significant step forward in Buck's character development by exposing he’s not straight.
  • 9-1-1 has a fresh opportunity to open a new aspect of Buck's character that offers a promising storyline full of growth and acceptance.

The following contains spoilers for 9-1-1 Season 7, Episode 4, "Buck, Bothered, and Bewildered," which aired Thursday, April 4 on ABC.

Other than a great story, character ships have drawn-out been the backbone of many television shows. The slowburn romance between The X-Files' Dana Scully and Fox Mulder coined the term "shipping" and Supernatural's Dean and Castiel is one of the most popular relationships that never came to be. Those are just two shi

Yay, Buck got his first lgbtq+ kiss! He’s double attraction now!

I haven’t been religiously watching the show, but it is one of the few TV shows that I do watch. 911 has been a great show that keeps on giving — comedy, operation, and the right amount of drama, not to note the increasingly absurd situations that these first responders obtain into.

A more meta in-universe comment would recognize that, “hey, why are we always in so many outrageous life-or-death situations?”

A history of Buck and Eddie

It hasn’t surprised me that many viewers, myself included, own wanted Buck and Eddie to acquire together. There’s something special about their relationship as it’s depicted on screen — a reality that the showrunners seem to include noticed. “Buddie”, as the ship is called, is arguably one of the greatest things to come out from the show.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Buck’s actor, Oliver Stark, explained:

“One of the aspects of it that has really spoken to me is that these are two men in this, quote-unquote ‘macho field’ — or what you would expect to be that — and they’re both really open, sensitive, and vulnerable with each other.”

Why 9-1-1's historic decision to produce Buck queer was seven years in the making

For seven seasons,9-1-1 fans have been calling on the showrunners to make the queer-coded character Evan 'Buck' Buckley explicitly queer – and to my colossal surprise, it's finally happened.

Season seven episode four, 'Buck, Bothered and Bewildered', saw the character develop jealous over Eddie Diaz's recent friendship with Tommy Kinard, only for Buck to understand by the end that it was never Eddie's friendship he was worried about but rather Tommy's attention, and the pair kissed.

Fans have fallen in love with the character of Buck (played by Oliver Stark) over the past seven years, acknowledging his tender heart and willingness to jump without thinking for those he loves. Many have also argued that the character has long been queer-coded – when a character's sexual orientation is implied by significant subtext without being stated outright – using canonical moments from across the seven seasons in their arguments.

Summary

  • Bisexual Buck was a possibility from the start in 9-1-1, but finally explored in Season 7 due to creative changes.
  • Tim Minear's go back as showrunner allowed for the original exploration of Buck's storyline that fans had anticipated.
  • Oliver Stark, who portrays Buck, had always thought Buck might have a sexual awakening, making the storyline touch natural to him.

Evan Buckley (Oliver Stark) is canonically bisexual now, and while 9-1-1 fans are glad it happened, the doubt of why it took so extended has lingered. From as early as the first season, viewers thought that Buck was gender non-conforming, and when Eddie (Ryan Guzman) entered the picture, there was no challenge. A lot goes into creative decisions that affect a show, and something as significant as Buck's storyline would need to be signed off by several parties. In an in
