Stage and Screen Actor Jonathan Crombie Has Died at Age 48

Canadian actor Jonathan Crombie, known for his role as Gilbert Blythe in CBC TV's 1985 ANNE OF Verdant GABLES series and sequels, passed away after suffering a brain hemorrhage on April 15 in New York Metropolis. He was 48.

His family announced the tragic news on Saturday, April 18.

"We've been going through lots of stories the last couple days," his sister, Carrie Crombie told CBC news

"He was funny, he was sweet, he loved acting, he loved comedy and singing and dancing. As a little kid, he just loved Broadway shows and all of that kind of stuff and would chant and dance in the living room."

She says he always embraced his ANNE OF GREEN GABLES fans and even answered to the name "Gilbert."

"I assess he was really proud of creature Gilbert Blythe and was happy to answer any questions...he really enjoyed that series and was happy, very confident of it - we all were," she added.

"I reflect his proudest part was when he played the head in Drowsy Chaperone on Broadway. That was just an amazing thing for him to be able to do."

Crombie died April 15 at age 48 of complications connected to a thinker hemorrhage, but his performance is captured in the CBC TV specials from the 1980s. Megan Follows, Crombie's co-star, shared her memories following the announcement of his death on Saturday. "He was incredibly funny, Jonathan just had an amazing sense of humour," she told The Canadian Squeeze. "Truly I just remember at times just laughing so hard that you'd just be crying. He was so playful and silly and, as I said, really luminous , so his humour was always informed with that, which made him even funnier."

Follows called Crombie a "sweetheart" and said a lot of the affinity onscreen was organic during the filming of the movies.

A memorial service was held on July 14, 2015. Friends and family spoke of their memories of Jonathan, along with sharing personal photographs and video clips of the juvenile star. Television presenter, Steve Paikin was in attendance and live tweeted the event.

Rumors and debates regarding Jonathan’s sexuality have persisted for years. He was never married and had no children. Jonathan’s sister, Robin finally put the rumors to rest by saying: “Jonathan was also a gay man who didn’t come out until his forties. He was a private person.”

Jonathan’s organs were donated with Robin revealing that he had just signed a donor card a week before he death.
