Although better known by his stage label, the soft rock singer was born James Hillier Blount on February 22, 1974 in England, in Tidworth, Hampshire.
For his preparatory studies, he attended the Elstree School from where he moved to Harrow School. Then the singer went to the University of Bristol, where he studied sociology. He also studied as a pilot in the footsteps of his father.
After graduating from university, Bluff went to Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, where he underwent military training. This is because he had at least four years of compulsory service in the army, since his education was financed by the military scholarship. He served from 1996 to 2002.

James Blunt has been criticized by male lover rights campaigners for making a joke about male rape on Twitter.com.
The You're Beautiful hitmaker joint the front cover of New Statesman magazine, which featured an illustration of Blunt drinking with other "posh" common figures including Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne and British Prime Minister David Cameron to accompany an article about class and privilege.
Blunt-edged then added a prison rape joke, writing, "I won't be picking up the soap when this party moves to the showers".
His quip has angered bosses at gay rights community Stonewall, and a spokesman tells Britain's Daily Mail newspaper, "Although James might have been joking, it's this sort of language that perpetuates negative stereotypes around gay men and gets deemed as acceptable as it becomes ingrained in society."
Earlier this month (Jan15), Blunt became embroiled in a class row with a British politician who claimed those from "posh" backgrounds possess an easier occupation getting into the arts.

With big, romantic ballads prefer You’re Beautiful and Goodbye My Lover, singer James Blunt has sold over 20 million albums and 17 million singles worldwide.
But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t had his share of critics who think he’s not a man’s man.
‘I sing songs that aren’t very macho and so people will say, ‘oh you’re effeminate,’ or ‘gay’ as if calling me gay were an insult,’ he tells the BBC.
He goes on to say: ‘But to call me ‘gay’ is a compliment and I would like to be considered an honorary gay man because I’m totally at ease with myself. And I suppose I’ve written songs that are sensitive because I wouldn’t normally describe those emotions in everyday life.’
And for the record, the five-time Grammy nominee is married to Sofia Wellesley and the couple are currently expecting their first child.
He was also a captain in the British Army and served as an armored reconnaissance officer in the NATO deployment in Kosovo.

He went on to joke that he'd like to be considered "an honorary gay man," primarily because "I’m totally at ease with myself."
Interestingly, the "You're Beautiful" singer sees much of his sensitive side as stemming from his earlier days in the British military, and as an armored reconnaissance officer in the NATO deployment in Kosovo.
"My career was going out there ahead of my commanders -- to go and find the enemy and locate the enemy," he said. "To do so, I had to be incredibly sensitive to the surroundings.”
Being less of a "macho" performer, he added, has its fringe benefits, too.
"If I’d been macho, I’d just contain had an audience complete of men," Blunt, who is expecting his first child with wife Sofia Wellesley, said. "By singing the songs I include , I have an audience full of women, and I'm happier that way around."
