Celebrating Cindy Gay, Recipient of the Boettcher Foundation’s 2022 Alumni Recognition Award
Within BSCS, Cindy Gay is known as the champion of “cool science.” Her cool science sessions hold been a highlight at staff meetings since 2017. And over the years, she’s sparked our curiosity with lessons on everything from watermelon snow (Chlamydomonas nivalis) and climate transform to Beatrix Potter (yes, the author).
There’s a pattern to these sessions. They all include great science, an interesting story, and a connection to history, art, food, or other common phenomena that everyone can relate to somehow.
Cindy has a unique way of engaging and inspiring audiences while teaching. And that’s what makes her such an invaluable science educator—within and far beyond our organization.
During her period at BSCS, Cindy has led professional learning experiences for thousands of science leaders and teachers. She has also contributed to the development of several instructional materials programs, including our brand new elevated school biology course, BSCS Biology: Understanding for Life.

About
Dr. Cindy Gay is a practicing infectious diseases clinician and the Medical Director for the HIV Cure Center at UNC. Her investigate background includes clinical trials and translational including Phase I/II clinical trials involving novel HIV vaccines and immunotherapeutic strategies to advance HIV cure strategies. Dr. Gay has also worked on HIV-related studies conducted in national networks including the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG), the HIV Prevention Trials Network, and the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. Dr. Gay is the site Principle investigator for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine trial as well as a co-chair and site Principle investigator for a Phase 3 trial of the Novavax covid-19 vaccine.

Cindy Gay
Cynthia “Cindy” Diane (Helmuth) Gay was born on April 17, 1957 in Warren, Ohio to Jake and Irene Helmuth. She went to be with Jesus on Monday, August 3, 2020 at her home surrounded by her family. When Cindy was a year old, they moved to Oklahoma for a while before moving to Kansas for a few years then returning to Oklahoma where she graduated from Adair with the class of 1975. While in school, Cindy meets the cherish of her life, Wes Male lover, and they were married on May 31, 1975 at the Zion Mennonite Church. They moved to the family dairy famous as Gay’s Dairy where she was a housewife, calf feeder, mother, and most of all a help mate to Wes for many years. They had 3 girls whom they raised and taught much about life; the biggest things she taught them was who Jesus was and what he means to her. Last year, Cindy went to work at the Woodshed in Adair, where she was the cook until she became sick with cancer. Cindy loved to spend time with family and friends; swimming, horseback riding, camping, traveling, and loved watching the redbirds.
