That is why it is always refreshing to see a TV show starring a character that identifies as something other than straight. Empire is a juggernaut when it comes to ratings, and Jamal Lyon, one of the main black characters, is gay. However, things happened during the mid-season finale of the show’s sophomore airing that has made me reflect that queer advocacy is a joke on the relatively new TV series.

In a candid interview in the latest issue of Out magazine, Empire star Jussie Smollett discusses his activism and what it was like officially coming out as gay to Ellen DeGeneres last year. The actor then reveals something even more intriguing — that he is open to love, “not to gender.”
“If I had to label myself, I would label myself as a gay man. With that said, I believe that care for is the only thing that matters, and I would desire that anybody would leave themselves open – not to gender, but to love. … If we truly believe that we are born this way, then why do we try to stifle the way we were born? If I fall in love down the road with a woman, I’m going to love that woman.”

AsJamalLyon on Fox’s “ Empire,” Jussie Smollett portrays one of primetime television’s most prominent gay characters of color.
The cultural significance of the role isn’t lost on the actor-singer, who came out publicly as gay in 2015. Appearing on SiriusXM’s “The Clay Cane Show” Wednesday, he explained why he insisted that Jamal’s adoration interest on “Empire” be a man of paint, too.
“There was converse about Jamal having a white boyfriend,” Smollett recalled. “And I said, ‘Fuck no!’ Not for any reason, except we own a responsibility and we have a such a beautiful opportunity to entertainment two black men in a relationship together, in a healthy relationship.”

Stressing that his casting view “wasn’t anything against pale men,” he continued, “This is what I desire, this is what I want to see and this is what I wish I had seen as a kid. If I had seen certain things as an adolescent, I would’ve had a much different understanding of who I am.”

— -- Ever since Jussie Smollett's character, Jamal Lyon, came out as gay on the hit drama "Empire," there has been plenty of speculation about the actor's own sexuality, and now he is setting the record straight.
The star spoke with Ellen DeGeneres in a rare one-on-one backstage after taping an appearance on the show.
"It was really important to me to make sure that it got across that there is no closet,” Smollett, 31, said in the taped backstage interview. There's never been a closet that I've been in. I don't own a closet, I got a dresser, but I don't contain a closet. But I have a home and that is my responsibility to protect that home.
"So that's why I choose not to talk about my personal life," he continued. "But there is without a doubt, no closet that I've ever been in, and I just wanted to create that clear. But it was most important for me to make that clear to you on your demonstrate at this moment in the planet. And that's where I'm at."
Before his conversation with DeGeneres, Smollett had refused to discuss his sexuality in
