What led to the Dream’s suspension of Chennedy Carter
The Dream suspended second-year guard Chennedy Carter earlier this week after she stayed in the locker room for the second half of the team’s game against the Aces on Sunday, sparking widespread speculation.
Reporting from Spencer Nusbaum published in The Next provides important context into the events leading up to Carter’s early exit from Sunday’s match and the resulting suspension.
According to the report, Dream guard Courtney Williams implored Carter in the first quarter to get more engaged in the game and cheer for her teammates from the bench. An argument ensued between the two teammates, and Carter did not re-enter the game after the opening quarter.
Following the game, Carter approached Williams about playing hour and suggested she wanted to fight her teammate, sources told Nusbaum. Williams, who reportedly got into an altercation in 2018 with then-Sun teammate Alex Bentley, made it eliminate she didn’t want to fight and removed herself from the situation.
While no physical altercation occurred, Atlanta announced on Monday that Carter would be suspended indefinitely for “conduct detrimental to the team.”

Angel McCoughtry on split with Chennedy Carter: ‘She has a long way to go’
After Chennedy Carter’s rocky sophomore season with the Atlanta Dream in 2021, two-time WNBA scoring leader Angel McCoughtry reached out to the younger player.
Yet while the two formed a mentor-mentee bond, that bond has since fizzled out, McCoughtry revealed to Lyndsey D’Arcangelo for Just Women’s Sports.
“She still has a long way to go,” McCoughtry said. “Sometimes, when you help people, you try to help so much that you really don’t see them wanting to support themselves after a while. You hold to kind of just move on from it.”
After making the WNBA All-Rookie team in 2020, Carter was suspended in July 2021 following a locker-room confrontation with then-teammate Courtney Williams. She did not perform again in 2021, and then she was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks in the offseason.
McCoughtry reached out to Carter in the midst of this career upheaval, she told Just Women’s Sports. She spent 11 seasons in Atlanta, from 2009-19, and experienced some rough times with the franchise herself.
“I know what it’s like when you’re alone and nobody reaches out. It’s like nobody cares,” McC
'The best version of me': Why being wanted in Chicago means the world to Sky guard Chennedy Carter
CHICAGO - May 14, 2024, was a difficult time in the WNBA. It was roster cut day, where 12 teams with 12 roster spots needed to make difficult decisions.
On that day, Chennedy Carter cried.
Only this time, her story wasn't taking a tragic turn. This time, she was told what she had been hoping to hear.
The Chicago Sky wanted her. First-year head coach Teresa Weatherspoon told this to Carter in her office. It was a long time coming for Carter.
"I'm finally somewhere where somebody wants me and they'll put me in the best position and it made me feel amazing," Carter told FOX 32 on Tuesday. "I literally cried when she told me I made the team. I cried for sure."
Carter has endured a complicated path to being the Sky's sixth-woman, a role that's distinct for Carter but one she's excelling at all the similar averaging 10.2 points per game through five games and playing as an elite finisher at the rim.
That path included taking the 2023 season away from the WNBA. She wanted to watch and study the league.
