Dominic Cooper
From The History Boys to Preacher and Mamma Mia! Dominic Cooper is now a Western sheriff dealing with That Messy Black Bag. I got to chat to him about riding horses, playing dad to Ironman, the future of Bond and productive with ABBA!
Sherriff McCoy is one hell of a role. How did you prepare for the role?
Dominic Cooper: We were fortunate, because the COVID lockdown gave us a few weeks to prepare before filming. Myself, Douglas Booth, who plays Red Bill and my deputies Christian Cooke and Ivan Shaw, would all rest together and possess in-depth rehearsals. I thought to myself ‘Why am I playing a sheriff in this spaghetti western? I’m not American and I don’t know that world’. I wasn’t well versed in it, but I think it’s nice to challenge yourself to do those things that you think you shouldn’t. So I had time to create the guy appealing, and not just play another heroic town sheriff.
He’s quite a deep and troubled character
Yes, he has a very dark past, a history he hates and a future he’s scared of. But I wanted him to be likable, even though he did things that were detestable. It’s quite a hard combination to achieve, and I did it through his physicality

He shared: "It still seems prohibitive. People [feel] nervous because of the old-fashioned attitudes that linger.
"It makes me so sad. We're making slow changes and I hope that we're becoming more fluid with our thinking.
"It's all so prehistoric. It astounds me. Youngsters are completely unfazed, they don't even blink."
Dominic - who identifies as unbent - drew a parallel between the film industry and those in the sporting world.
Speaking to Attitude magazine, he explained: "Things are switching and along with that will approach the attitude towards who you necessitate to be in Hollywood. And sport.
"Look at sports personalities who don't feel confident or comfortable enough to do it. A life not being who you can be must be very difficult."
