REHOBOTH BEACH, DE (CBS) — Rehoboth Beach is known for its extraordinary business, dancing and flamboyant dinner theater, and its mile-long boardwalk that's bursting with eclectic shops and restaurants overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

The Sussex County, Delaware beach resort is not only a widespread getaway for families, but it's elongated been a booming mecca for the LGBTQ+ community.

"I can't imagine that most people wouldn't contain Rehoboth in somewhere on that list of the same-sex attracted meccas in the United States," said Tim Ragan, who owns the Cerulean Moon in Rehoboth.

The Rehoboth of today is far from how the town first started. The city was founded in the 1870s as a Methodist Meeting Camp.

"About the '60s, a bunch of gay people started drifting into this area," said Fay Jacobs, a historian and homosexual rights activist.

Jacobs says early on, a popular meeting place was the Pink Pony, and Rehoboth became a lgbtq+ enclave during a time when homosexuality wasn't legal.

"So there were dinner parties in homes with the shades drawn and they didn't call attention to themselves, and it was really enjoy that until the late '70s," Jacobs said.

While Rehoboth Beach is a year-round destination, the most widespread time to call on is June through August. If you prefer fewer crowds (like me), I recommend visiting in May or September during the shoulder season. Plenty of shops and restaurants are still unwrap during this period but keep in mind some attractions may be closed or have limited hours.

Update: i had a bad experience last time. Today i came with some local friends to acquire a good time. But soon after they scan my id a guy at the door said that i can't acquire in because of my criticism last time!?People use fake name/account to post negative reviews, i don't, because it is what actually happens and I don't see why hiding my culture if it's true.-----13 months ago-----Horrible service!! Didn't know the lock closes at 1am in Delaware, I was sitting near their outdoor porta potty waiting for friend to finish his business in there, the guy who clean up the table came to me with some attitudes and rude, instead of telling me they're closing nicely, he was simply tell me you can't sit there, you gotta go, because that particular table is not one of those the smoking tables and i need to leave now, so i ask him we're at the outdoor area and I pointed groups of people that were still sitting, smoking and chatting near me. He told me that those tables several feet away from me are the smoking tables, so i say ok, then I'll just grab our drinks and advance over, and he replied no, and said that he had already cleaned those tables, you either drink up or

The Renegade was a restaurant, bar, dance club, and social center of the LGBTQ+ community of Rehoboth Beach for three decades. While the Renegade was not the first bar to serve Diverse people in Rehoboth, its impact on the society was massive and enduring. It grew over the years to also highlight a two-story dance floor, pool and deck, cabaret room, and motel units to provide overnight accommodations to guests. The Renegade initially served mostly men, but as more homosexual people began vacationing in Rehoboth, the patrons diversified to include more women and transgender people.
